New ASTM D 7346 Method for ISL MPP5Gs

The NEW ASTM D 7346 method covers the determination of no-flow point temperature of petroleum products using an automatic instrument. The method D 7346-07 was officially approved and published in August 2007.

NO FLOW POINT TEST METHOD

The no flow point of petroleum products is an index of the lowest temperature of its utility for some applications. Cold flow characteristics such as no-flow point can be critical for the operation of lubricating systems, fuel systems and pipeline operations. It requires precise measurement of the flow properties. The detection principle is based on continuous monitoring of variation of air pressure within closed test specimen chamber. The test specimen is continuously tested until reaches the temperature where it stops to flow when undergoing cooling.

D 7346 method covers sample range of lubrication & base stock oils, PAO, distillate fuels and biodiesel. Comparing to other test methods the instrument provides a higher resolution and uses only a sample volume of less than 1 mL

In close cooperation with the petroleum industry PAC introduced the Automated ISL MPP5Gs Analyzer that incorporates the new ASTM D 7346 method. To estimate the method precision for determining the no-flow point, ASTM conducted an interlaboratory test study consisting of 26 laboratories and 38 sample sets ranging from base oils, various lubricating oils up to fuel oils and biodiesel. The ASTM D 97 method was used as a control check since cold flow properties are typically measured by pour point. The test results demonstrated that the no-flow method is a robust technique for cold flow properties determining and provides equal precision for both known and unknown samples.
